Holy Spirit School opened its doors on September 15, 1965 under the auspices of the Dominican sisters of Caldwell. The building was erected on the 7.5 acre complex and consisted of 8 classrooms, a library and music room. Two single family homes were joined to serve as Holy Spirit’s convent and housed the four nuns assigned to the school. Three nuns and five lay people the first faculty, educated 359 students.
In 1975 the two remaining nuns moved to St. Michael’s convent in Union and the convent was transformed to house the first ½ day kindergarten class and CCD offices. In 1984 PreK 3 year old and 4 year old ½ day afternoon programs were added to accommodate the demands of the community. In 1987 the PreK 3 year old program was dropped and the 4 year old program was expanded to 5 afternoons per week and the kindergarten class was expanded to full days. The PreK program began full day session in 2008.
Holy Spirit School draws from the Union residents and all the surrounding towns. Throughout the years students have come to us from many outlying towns to accommodate parents working in the immediate area.
Throughout the years Holy Spirit has worked hard to keep up with the ever increasing technology in society. The school has 24 computers in the 6,7,8 grade classrooms. There are 3 computers in each of the remaining grades. The computer room has 14 computers and a SMART board.
Gr, 3,5,7 have SMART boards and are used within the daily curriculum in each grade. It is the intention of the administration to have all classrooms equipped with SMART boards when the means allow.
Holy Spirit School is a very special place “Where all God’s children come together”.
